Day 20 – Getting Closer to Your Authentic Self

Do you sometimes feel as if  you are living to impress other people or to be accepted by your tribe/family/colleagues?

How can you peel off the false layers that cover up your authentic self? One technique I use to get closer to living as my authentic self is to follow my bliss — what brings me joy, what lights me up inside. This has never led me astray. It always leads to more opening and more opportunities. I remember one time in my life that I was feeling lost as to how to answer the question, “What is next?” At the time, I decided to take a sewing class to learn how to sew my own clothes. I ended up really loving it and took another semester of classes. When I tuned in to what I loved, the answer was sewing, creating, and fashion. So I looked up Parsons the New School for Design in NYC and I saw that the applications were due in 2 days. So I talked to my partner and decided to apply even though I didn’t have a lot of time to complete the application and the art that was required for review. … And I got in!

We moved across the country and had some wonderful adventures that year, even though we lived apart. It was crazy! It was wonderful. I am so grateful for all the people we met that year.

And then we moved back to CA and continued onto our next chapter of life, continually moving closer and closer to our core essence, our authentic selves.

So many things clicked into place when I made the decision to lean in to what was lighting me up and exciting me at that time in my life. And this has happened many, many times over the past 20 years. Just leaning into what felt good, what felt effortless, what felt right has always brought me closer to living as my authentic self.
